Day 2

I think I'm finally settled. I chose to stay in downtown St. Louis because it has a lot of amenities close by, i.e. a grocery store and library. I've been walking pretty much everywhere I want to go. It's tough because I'm not used to this cold. It's 27° here already! It's only 33° in Memphis, but still.

Observations

People

I've heard that people in St. Louis are not friendly, are standoff-ish, and don't take to kindly to outsiders. I haven't had that experience so far. People have been saying "hi" to me in passing like they would in the South. Some start conversations and are genuinely curious about my moving here.

Traffic

If you ever come to Memphis, be forewarned that many of us are not good drivers! Half of us don't even have car insurance. Drivers are not bad in St. Louis, but they take risks I would never see as often in my home town. I've seen so many people making u-turns and driving the wrong way down one way streets that I've lost count.

Wal-Mart

If you live in the South, you go to Wal-mart at least once a week and you know of at least 3 locations in a 50 mile radius. The St. Louis Wal-mart is on the outskirts of the city and 30 minutes away via expressway! I went there to go grocery shopping and they didn't have Vigo Black Beans & Rice! I'm super broke since I moved here without a job, so black beans & rice are a crucial food item for me. It laaassts. To say the least, I was highly disappointed.

More later.
